Should Auld Acquaintance Bring Dan Fogelberg to Mind...

It's New Year's Eve, and I'm not thinking of parties, champagne and dancing in high heels, but of Dan Fogelberg oddly enough. I just heard "Same Auld Lang Syne".... a nostalgic classic that evokes bittersweet emotions every time I hear it... sadness... old joys... and shoulda-coulda-woulda's. Dan Fogelberg was a gifted songwriter. He could paint a story with his lyrics, and bring listeners to an emotional place.  Every time I hear this song, I picture ME bumping into an old lover at the grocery store... seeing my purse spill out... he and I laughing about it... engaging small talk at the checkout line... searching for a bar afterwards... buying a six-pack at the liquor store instead... drinking it in my car and reminiscing... he gets out... I drive away... and the snow turns into rain. Boom-Boom-POW! That was the power of Dan Fogelberg. You TOTALLY could see yourself in the scenarios he sings about with purity and honesty. I have ran into old lovers a time or two, but never with the poignancy like this song evokes. Wish they had. Dan Fogelberg, thank you for your music. Thank you for this song.  You left our world much too soon (1951-2007). Regrettably, he has NOT been inducted in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. What a travesty! Wanna make the first difference in 2011? Click here and vote.  Dan, you are not forgotten.  HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!

God's Gift on Christmas Eve

When a dear friend shared Pastor Reid's story, I felt a strong compulsion to pass it on and share it with all of you. The story was so beautiful and so... PERFECT FOR TODAY... Christmas Eve!   Regardless of what faith and belief you have, this true story will move you as it did me. It is my sincerest wish that you and yours experience true happiness, good health, abounding love and fresh hope in this most wonderous and spiritual of all holidays!  Merry Christmas!

"The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn, arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve.

They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc. and on December18th were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19th, a driving rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.

On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.

The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.

By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc. to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked, and how it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was white as a sheet. "Pastor," she asked "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials "EBG" were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before in Austria!

The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria. When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. However, he was captured and sent to prison. She never saw her husband or her home again.

The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth, but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home, that was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job.

The church had a wonderful service on Christmas Eve. It was practically full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews and the the pastor wondered why he didn't leave.

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall, because it was identical to the one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war, and these two tablecloths were so much alike!

He told the pastor how the Nazis came, and how he forced his wife to flee for her safety. He was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. That was 35 years ago. He never saw his wife or his home again.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door... and he witnessed... the GREATEST Christmas reunion that he could ever imagine....

Father, God, bless all my friends and family in what ever it is that You know they may be needing this day! May their life be full of your peace, prosperity, and power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you. Amen."   ~Pastor Rob Reid

Things happen for a reason... Merry Christmas!

Oh, Neti Pot, Let Me Count The Ways!

So, with all the dust, pollen and other allergens in the air especially during Spring time, many peeps, including self, are suffering annoying allergy symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and post-nasal drips. Ugh! Suffer no more. Nasal irrigation is my new best friend, all in the form of my Neti Pot. Thank you Oprah, Dr. Oz, and BFFs who recommended I use this product when my allergies were acting up. Just remember to use lukewarm water, keep your mouth open during the process, sound out the letter "K" (helps with not getting solution down your throat), and to do irrigate 1-2 times a day. I rarely plug a product, but this really worked for me! My allergens have a new foe this season, and the Neti Pot will prevail! Boo-Ya!

Happy Easter!

When I was a child growing up in NC, my family used to live across the street from this amazing yard. It was beautifully landscaped and meticulously TLC'd by its homeowner Ronnie. Ronnie pretty much kept to himself. His neighbors knew the yard, but not the man. Ronnie was a gifted gardener. During the week, he would pore hours of loving devotion to his yard-gallery. I can still see him pushing his lawn mower, raking up grass, kneeling over his flower beds, pulling up weeds, planting his flowers.... busy, busy, busy. To me the most beautiful time of the year is Easter. I credit this to the quiet man who loved his yard. Ronnie's yard cheered the neighborhood with its bounty of flowers, and were a welcomed sight each year. My favorite flower combos to this day are purple tulips and yellow daffodils. Ronnie would plant so many of them throughout his yard, and by Easter they would burst forth and bloom into vivid beacons of Spring. Although tulips and daffodils do not grow in Egypt, I still acquaint them with Easter. Maybe it is why I write nostalgically for this floral pair, and recall fondly the genesis of when they became my favorites. So, Ronnie, wherever you are, thank you for unknowingly giving me a lifetime love for purple tulips and yellow daffodils at Easter. No matter where I am, I still appreciate the sight of them during holy week. Happy Easter!

Another Blue Peeps Flick?

I don't know if the hype of Avatar influenced this latest Hollywood film project, or if the rash of oldie remakes did it, but in 2011 there will be another blue-skinned flick that will be hitting the cinemas. Can you guess what it is?

No, it's not the Blue Man Group....

Here's a hint below.... still having trouble guessing?

Ready for the answer? Wait for it.... wait.... wait ....

Tadahhhhhhhhh: The newly anticipated smurfs movie is making its way to 21st century filmaking, and is set to be a mixture of live-action and animation. Pop singer Katy Perry ("I kissed a girl") has signed on to lend her voice for Smurfette, and actors Alan Cumming and Neil Patrick Harris have also committed to the project. It's going to be interesting to see this other favored blue-skinned film up on the big screen. La La La La La La, La La La La La!

Masalama, Debbie!

Well, Debbie left 30 minutes past midnight this morning. Soooo, technically she didn't fly out on 9/11.... we spent Friday on the DL, recuperating from a whirlwind week of madcap adventures that I had anticipated. I remember when I sent Deb the itinerary for her trip, she gleefully snorted and laughed out loud. She is always game at whatever I throw her way, even if it means sweltering heat and the period of Ramadan that we had not anticipated when we planned for her trip in January. We've been BFFs for 24 years, and while our careers have taken us in opposite directions, our reunions are ALWAYS a blessing. So, Deb, as you head back home to Virginia, here's a few souvenirs of your trip. Thanks for coming out to see me. I'm already planning for next year's Baltic Cruise. See ya at Christmas! Aywa (Yes)!!! LoL.

Laverne and Shirley Together Again!

So, two years ago my dearest BFF Debbie visited me when I was living in SoCal. I took her all over the place... Joshua Tree (because we SOOO loved Bono and the boyz back then).... Palm Springs.... San Diego.... Coronado.... just about all my favorite stomping grounds that we had time to visit in 4 fun-packed days.

I love this photo I took of Deb.

She will arrive over the Labor Day weekend, and spend an entire week with me in Cairo!! I'm SOOOO excited! My first stateside visitor!! I have so much planned for her visit. Debbie and I go waaaay back. We've been BFFs since I was a senior in high school if that tells you anything. LoL. After the Eric episode (that's Eric with a "C", bc Erik with a "K" came later), she moved to Wilmington while I was attending UNCW.... and the hilarious misadventures that followed as roomies had us pegged as the Laverne and Shirley of the 80's. LoL. Oh! The stories we could tell! So many laughable "Laverne and Shirley-esque" moments that still have us chuckling whenever we recall them during a "remember when?" marathon. In honor of Debbie's visit, here's a li'l vintage (Ugh! Has it come to that?!?) Laverne & Shirley flashback.... Enjoy!

A Virtual Evening at Le Petit Théâtre de Chimères

This evening the lovely Bonnie from Diamonds and Daisies has lured me from the sandy deserts of Cairo to virtually alight a carriage that will take us to Paris....

where her very talented playwright friend Anita from Castles Crowns and Cottages has virtually invited blogging guests to attend the third act of her cleverly written play, Goodnight Sweet Prince, performed at Le Petit Théâtre de Chimères: Act 1, Act 2, Act 3. <--Click here x 3.

The play centers around an incorrigible, yet loveable fox terrier named Balzac, who mills around the winding streets of Paris and into the melting place of your heart!

The final act will be unveiled next Saturday. Interested guests are asked to submit their entries to Anita by email no later than Friday, September 4, 2009. So, alight your own virtual carriage to catch the third act and become inspired!

But alas! I need to hurry!!! This is also my first attendance, and I'm in a flutter as to what to wear! I just glanced over my balcony and caught sight of my awaiting carriage below. Needless to say, it's causing quite a commotion on the streets! So, I've decided to wear vintage flapper.

Decisions. Decisions. Maybe I'll wear this?

Egads! I must simply get rid of this ol' thing! But low n' behold, tucked in the nether regions of my bursting closet is THE perrr-fect dress!

Just need to touch up my make-up. Apply new lipstick. Pull back my bob with this adorable marcasite barrette. Dab on Chanel.

Slip my feet into these silken slippers.

Grab my mobile and change out my evening bag.

And last but not least, carry my lace fan for a li'l flirting.

Au Revoir!

Update: Click here for the unveiling of Act IV.

Goin' to the Chapel of Love

August mourns another life, as "Chapel of Love" songwriter Ellie Greenwich, died yesterday in NYC. Her lilting can't-get-outta-your-head-once-you-hear-it song brought millions of smiles as couples said their "I do's" in the metaphorical chapels of love around the world. In tribute to Ellie Greenwich, click on the link below and sing along to her catchy lyrics .

Goin' to the chapel

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Goin' to the chapel

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Gee, I really love you

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Goin' to the chapel of love....

whoa-oh-oh

Birds all sing as if they knew

Today's the day we'll say "I do"

And we'll never be lonely anymore

because we're....

Goin' to the chapel

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Goin' to the chapel

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Gee, I really love you

And we're gonna get ma-a-arried

Goin' to the chapel of love....

Bells will ring

the-e-e sun will shine

whoa-oh-oh

I'll be his and he'll be mine

We'll love until the end of time

My Condolences to the Kennedy Family

The media has been abuzz with the passing yesterday of Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy, who expediently followed the death of his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver 2 weeks earlier. My condolences go out to the Kennedy clan, who prolifically have had to endure a lifetime of funeral gatherings. Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Senator Ted Kennedy were 5th and 9th respectively of nine children to former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain and prestigious businessman, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Mrs. Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Their auspicious union created one of the most influential and politically powerful dynasties in America. No other family in America has carried the legacy, tragedy, and fodder for sensational and respected journalism than the deep Irish roots of this family. To celebrate the lives of these two beloved Kennedy members and respected long standing public servants, let us remember them during happier times when they were young and carefree and not yet burdened with the tragedies and ecstasies of their consequent life. Godspeed onward.

REST IN PEACE: Eunice Kennedy Shriver
July 10, 1921 – August 11, 2009

REST IN PEACE: Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy
February 22, 1932 – August 25, 2009

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry—
I am not there... I did not die...

Do the 3/50 Project!

Ever hear of the 3/50 project? Thanks to its founder Cinda Baxter, thousands of citizens are doing their part to help our troubled economy. This inspiring blogger first created the concept on a flyer, posted it on her blog AlwaysUpward.com, and then created the 3/50 project website. Within 1 week, her site received 7500 hits, and it has since continued to grow in strength. What is the 3/50 Project you ask?

1) Pick 3 fave independent stores in your community (no national chains!)

2) Divy and spend $50/month on your fave 3 (or as much as you can!)

3) Save your local economy (do your part!)

"For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays... Spend it online and nothing comes home."

Now we gotta do our part by spreading the word, and spending a li'l monthly retail therapy on 3 fave mom n' pop stores.

Goes to show that the power of the blog can go a lonnnnnng way. So, blog it forward!

In Loving Memory of my Cabbits

Seeing these adorable "cabbits" remind me of Paco and Pepper that I had in Spain. Both were given to me by my then boyfriend, and they were completely inseparable. They loved each other so much. Paco, my rabbit, thought he was a cat. LoL. I never had to place him in a cage, because Pepper had thankfully taught him how to use her kitty litter. In turn Paco taught Pepper how to hop. Together they would hop down the hallway until Pepper would race ahead, and then would look back at Paco as if to say, "Hurry up slow poke!" LoL. They were the epitome of "strange bedfellows". They always snuggled together when they slept. Both, however, have since crossed the "Rainbow Bridge". I picture them now hopping playfully across a daisied meadow no longer in pain... young again... furry comrades forever.

Home Sick With Homesick

Although the first day of Summer isn't officially declared until late June, I personally kick it off on the eve of Memorial Day week-end.... but this year I'm not feeling it. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I'm in Egypt.... and the rest of it with the fact that I am HOMESICK. For all my travels, home is the ONLY place I'd rather be. When I'm living in the states, I revolve my summer plans around my trips home to North Carolina. As I type this, I hear James Taylor's stirring melody playing in my head....

"In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina...Can't you see the sunshine...Can't you just feel the moonshine...Maybe just like a friend of mine...It hits me from behind...Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind...."

I've been couchridden for the last coupla days with a nasty cold. The good thing about working at a research medical institute for infectious diseases is that if you're sick - you're encourage to stay home. And while it was good the first day, I am feeling serious pangs of cabin fever and homesickness on my 3rd day. Tomorrow I go back to work!

During my germ seclusion, I have pored over blogs and email communications and gotten a heavy dose of family updates that have me hankering for home. If I had not used so much vacation time at Christmas, I would've been able to squeeze in a visit this summer.... but then again, Christmas vacation was priceless and well worth every single moment of family time. I won't be home again until Christmas, and it's a lonnnng ways off..... Sigh.

To my family: Thank you for always keeping the light on, so I can always find my way back home. I love you around the world and back. I miss you.

"Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind ..."

[Gosh, I get sappy when I'm sick.]

I Love My Sky to the Lar!

I can breathe easier. It's officially over. LoL. I tried to keep this year's birthday on the DL, but my rascally sister Pamela (Thx, Pam-Pam!) blogged it to the world yesterday with this precious pic of my nephew Skylar, a.k.a. Skybug, Sky dawg, Sky of my Heart... clutching his little sign. He's the baby of the family, and soooo darn cute! This pic was the BEST birthday prezzie ever!

Meet Me in D.C.

I left for Cairo early Monday morning and headed to Reagan (Dulles) International in D.C. where I was to have a 6 hour layover. To my surprise, my BFF Gina who lives in MD, met me there and we spent some valuable time together before I flew out of the country. I was delighted and touched that she did that (and thank you, Steve, for watching the kiddies, so she could)!

Here's my KrAzEe friend hamming it up for the camera x 2.
We went to "Angeethi" for yummy Indian Cuisine. Our friendship goes back 13 years to our Rota, Spain days. Gina is my Rock of Gibraltar, which ironically was an island we explored together.
The food was great and conversation uproariously funny. We had not seen each other since summer, when I explored historic downtown Philly with her and her beautiful family.
Cheers to my BFF Gina whose Birthday & Wedding Anniversary fell on January 7th! CONGRATULATIONS to 14 Years of Wedded Bliss & Turning 21 Again!!! LoL.
After scanning the neighborhood for worthy thrift store explorations (as is our modus operandi), we settled for Starbucks where we continued to catch up, laugh, and drink Caramel Frappuccino Ventis. Ever the blogging addict, I finished my "Bon Voyage to Egypt" entry, while Gina read "Breaking Dawn" - the last book of the Twilight series. Gina (and her sister Renea) got hooked on the fabulous Tween series after my persistent not so subtle urgings. LoL. Altogether our 6 hours flew by quickly, and then it was time to take me back to the airport.
As we tearfully parted and I headed to my boarding gate, I thought about my family and friends and how God has truly blessed me with the love and bounty of both. I just wish I could fit all of them in my suitcase, so I could take them with me to Egypt!

Just For You, Debs

As we locked up our log cabin for the last time, Debbie and I couldn't help but feel a little sad that our little staycation was over and life in the real world had to resume. It was a wonderful 3 days, especially since we rarely get a chance to spend quality BFF time anymore since our jobs have taken us to infinity and beyond. It was nice to do things (shop! shop! shop!) on our trip that we weren't able to do during our "Hamburger Helper Days" in Wilmington. We were so poor! I remember how we used to sell our blood at the Plasma Center, so we'd have enough money to pay the cable bill.
Ahhhhh... Lifestyles of the Young and Foolish. Over the last 24 years, our friendship has experienced highs and lows as we completed our degrees; climbed our career ladders; moved to various parts of the US, and in my case, out of the US; waded through unchartered waters of 80's fashion faux pas; fell in and out of love with Mr. Right Now's, and in Deb's case, had 13 years of wedded blisses and misses with one of 'em; celebrated family gains; and commiserated over family losses.

A lifetime of shared friendship indeed.

Deb, it was soooo wonderful spending time with you over the holidays. Thank you for coordinating the Gatlinburg trip and allowing me to share it with family. Mi familia es su familia --- My family is your family! I love ya, Girly-O! See ya in Egypt in September!
